The past few months have been busy for VBC’s young adult ministry! It’s always a joy to see the people God brings us in each season, and the ways He works in the lives of those within our group. Through our various trips, outings and events, it has been neat to see new people become a vital part of our community and grow in their faith. Within the Quest Ministry, we spend time learning the Truth of God’s Word and encouraging one another to be better disciples of Jesus – and we sure do like having fun together!
Since the start of the year, Quest has had 2 big trips: The Quest for Snow and The Springish Retreat. The Quest for Snow took place in Groveland, CA, and we had around 30 Quest-ers join us in the cozy cabin. We spent the days hiking or exploring town, our mornings and evenings doing devotionals together, and on our last day there it snowed on us! We were able to make a great connection with the Groveland Evangelical Free Church, which is where the guys in our group stayed for the weekend. On that Sunday, we were able to attend their service and meet many fellow believers. It was an encouragement for all!
The Springish Retreat was equally as encouraging, with 60 Quest-ers of all ages camping out in cabins in Sonora, CA. Our guest speaker was our good friend Nick Breitbart, who was a regular part of our VBC family and currently lives up in Rocklin with his wife and 3 children. He spoke on the storms of life, and how to navigate through them in a godly way. The topic resonated with many people, and we had some great times of drawing near to God through teaching, reflection, group discussion, and musical worship. Between sessions, we spent time playing games at camp, relaxing, exploring the nearby towns of Columbia and Sonora, and hiking. It was wonderful to see new friendships form and deepen through spending time together outside of our typical Thursday night hang outs. We asked for prayer for each of these trips, and it was wonderful to see God moving and responding to our requests!
Another way we’ve seen God working in our ministry is through our Thursday night meetings called The Gathering. These evenings are usually attended by anywhere from 80 to 100 people of all ages, and we now have regular childcare available for the young families! Typically we have a time of fellowship, teaching, prayer, and musical worship, but this year our format has switched up a bit to include group discussion. We sometimes set up tables to encourage talking in small groups or for special events. Since the beginning of the year, we’ve had several Thursday night events, including a Valentine’s dessert banquet (complete with a relationship panel of wise and godly couples/singles in our church), a commemoration of Maundy Thursday (where we learned about the traditional elements of a Passover meal and how they point to Christ), and even a trivia/group discussion night (where we wrapped up our James series by reviewing what we learned and how to apply it in a fun and interactive way).
Every Thursday night ends with a Post-Gathering hang out. We either meet up at Lazy Dog, Chick-Fil-A or some other restaurant, or we have an in-house pizza party. Either way, we like to spend time encouraging each other in community and having a good time together every week!
What’s next for Quest? In June we have our Camp Chinquapin trip coming up, where we will join the larger church body up at Family Camp. During the Summer months, we will be welcoming the incoming college freshmen (from the High School Ministry) into Quest, and helping their transition by getting them connected with some of our Quest Team and holding a Brinner Party in their honor (Brinner = breakfast for dinner).
In July we will be joining the HSM on their annual Arizona Outreach, where we will be sharing the good news of Christ to the Navajo Nation. We are also currently praying about taking a Quest trip to South Africa before the end of the year. We would love to visit one of our missionaries Nicole Gillette and help care for the orphans that she oversees. It’s all fun and exciting, and we are asking for the Lord’s direction and guidance! Whatever the Lord has for us this year, our prayer is that we will be faithful to abide in His will and go where He leads us!
